Fatigue is a term used to describe an overall feeling of tiredness or lack of energy. It can have both physical and mental components. Physical fatigue refers to the body's inability to continue functioning at its normal level of activity due to prolonged exertion. As we engage in physical activity, our muscles begin to run low on adenosine triphosphate (ATP) - the key source of energy. Lactic acid also builds up faster than it can be removed. All this leads to temporary reduced muscle power and performance. Some key things to know about physical fatigue:
- It's a protective mechanism to prevent damage from overexertion. Forcing fatigued muscles to continue can cause muscle strain or tears.
- It's often felt as heavy limbs, muscle soreness, or a lack of endurance.
- It can be caused by intense physical exercise, physical labor, illness, or poor nutrition/hydration.
- Working for long hours without breaks
- Sleep deprivation
- High stress
- Difficulty concentrating or focusing
- Reduced motivation
- Increased irritability
- Headaches
- Fatigue despite having enough rest
